Eligibility

Eligibility is based on the following criteria:
    • Will your child be 3 or 4 years old by August 31st of the year you plan to enroll in Head Start?
    • Does your income fall below the Income Guidelines set by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families? (A Family Advocate can help you determine this. At least 90% of the children enrolled must be from Income Eligible families.)
    • Does your child have a diagnosed disability? (At least 10% of the total number of children enrolled must have a diagnosed disability.)

Eligibility will be determined by a needs assessment using screening criteria established by RCS Head Start and availability of classroom space.

If you are eligible for RCS Head Start, but there are no slots available in the program, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified of vacancies as they arise.

Enrollment

To enroll your child, please contact a Family Advocate at a site near you (click here to find a Head Start location near you) to see if you are eligible to receive Head Start services and to set an appointment to complete the necessary enrollment paperwork.

You will be asked to verify your income by providing one of the following documents:
    • A copy of your most recent Individual Income Tax Form 1040, or
    • W-2 Forms, or
    • Three (3) consecutive pay stubs, or
    • Monthly public assistance check, or
    • Child Support checks, or
    • Foster Care checks, or
    • A copy of any other verification deemed necessary to determine eligibility
    • A signed statement from an employer on company letterhead

You will also be asked to fill out a Pre-Enrollment form with the help of a Family Advocate, if necessary. We will need copies of the following:
    • Your child's immunization record
    • Your child's birth certificate
    • Your child's Social Security card
    • Your child's Medicaid card or private insurance card

A physical exam form will be requested on the first day of class. If your child's physical exam has not yet been completed, we must have the RCS Head Start Physical Exam Form (link to a PDF printable copy of this form?) completed by a physician, certified nurse practitioner, or public health nurse within 30 days, or your child may not be allowed to come to school. If you need assistance in locating a physician, setting an appointment for your child's physical, or transportation, please contact your Family Advocate.
