Key Facts About Regional Consolidated Services Head Start Program

 

Regional Consolidated Services, a private, non-profit human services agency incorporated in 1979, administers the federal Head Start program for Alamance, Caswell and Randolph Counties, North Carolina.

 

RCS Head Start is a program committed to providing quality, comprehensive, preschool services to eligible children and their families, which will promote self-sufficiency, self worth, and productivity in the community. We offer comprehensive child and family services including screening and follow-up in the areas of health (including dental, medical & mental health), social services, parent involvement, and education.

 

RCS Head Start operates 28 classrooms in seven centers as follows:

 

µ Caswell Community Head Start, Yanceyville

µ Graham Head Start, Graham

µ Janice S. Scarborough Head Start, Burlington

µ Head Start Junction, Burlington

µ Head Start Station, Ramseur

µ Connie Redding Head Start, Asheboro

µ Russell Walker Head Start, Asheboro

 

Two centers in Burlington (JSS and HSJ) operate full day to support our working parents. The average class size in RCS Head Start classrooms is 18. The staff/child ratio is 1:9. Three centers attained NAEYC Accreditation in 2005.

According to the US Census, 14% of children in Alamance County, 20% of children in Caswell County, and 13% of children in Randolph County live in poverty. 570 preschoolers in Alamance County, 110 preschoolers in Caswell County and 489 preschoolers in Randolph County are living in households whose income falls at or below the federal poverty guidelines. All are eligible for the RCS Head Start Program.

 

RCS Head Start currently only has funding to serve 273 preschoolers in Alamance County (44% of those that are eligible); 48 preschoolers in Caswell County (41% of those that are eligible); and 164 preschoolers in Randolph County (29% of those that are eligible).
